“Generally we’re pleased with where we are the first year after the combination,” said firm chairman Richard Alexander. “The combination needs to be measured not after one year, but long term [to] what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer recorded $951.5 million in revenue in 2017, about $7 million more than the firms’ combined revenues in 2016. Arnold & Porter notched $624 million in revenue in 2016 and Kaye Scholer counted $320 million in 2016, according to ALM data.

Baker Botts‘s gross revenue dropped 13.5 percent and its net income fell 24.3 percent in 2017—a year after the firm posted record results boosted by big contingency fees.

“Last year, we had a once-in-a-blue-moon result, said Andrew Baker, the firm’s managing partner. “This is strong, steady growth.”

In 2016, gross revenue improved by 20.2 percent compared with 2015, and net income jumped 44.5 percent compared with the prior year. Baker Botts said those results were due in part to a 2016 windfall from contingency fees. It did not reveal the source of the fees but multiple news outlets reported that it received a significant fee connected to a $755 million Vivendi SA settlement with Liberty Media.

Two years removed from one of the strongest two-year financial runs among Am Law 100 firms, Jenner & Block last year saw its second straight year of flat-to-down financial performance.

Revenue at the Chicago-based firm, known for its top-tier litigation practice, dropped 1.9 percent in 2017 to $448.7 million. Profits per partner tumbled nearly 19 percent to $1.4 million.

The fall in PPP stemmed in part from expenses related to a surge in the firm’s nonequity partner ranks, which rose about 14 percent to 117 partners last year. Compensation of nonequity partners rose 27 percent from the year prior.

While its gross revenue barely budged last year, Shearman & Sterling was able to lift its equity partner profits in 2017 about 7 percent.

Shearman leaders said the main drivers in profitability growth were the firm’s “business mix,” and that its strategy is aimed toward growing disproportionately in the United States with corporate clients.

In a signal of these efforts, the firm announced on Thursday that it is moving into Texas—a development that has been in the works for several weeks.
