These were more common when I started ('05/'06) -- seemed like there would be at least one in-person session on every M&A deal to work through any stubborn points at the end. We also used to have closings in person more commonly.

Now they only seem to be common when foreigners are involved. Doesn't matter whether Asian or Euro -- they really like to meet in-person.

I sat there quietly and ran changes that more important people were negotiating. Occasionally spoke re: disclosure schedules.

Usually a bunch of men in a conference room with a "war room" (thankfully people I worked for didn't call it that) or "break-out room" for each side. Clients would drop by periodically but always leave by 7 or 8. Food would be ordered in or come from the firm kitchen -- sometimes the firm hosting it would handle, other times we'd order our own.

Long hours. Lots of downtime / interruptions though waiting for client, or some lawyer would have another call, etc. For the ones out of town they were billing bonanzas.

Also had some bonding time grabbing beers with the senior associate on the deals when we traveled. One of the rare times to chat with people v. everyone rushing to GTFO to wife and kids when at home.

cr, makes sense. It's different when you're the asshole who actually has to do the work.
